Class Details
Come and learn how to decorate a hand-sewn, denim market bag with Sashiko stitching. It’s a chance to learn or refine your needle skills from quilter and Mending Club founder Nanci Feeney. For the uninitiated, Sashiko is a mindful Japanese mending craft. The name literally means “little stabs”, and is a visible form of decorative stitching that developed in Japan in the 1600s.
In designing the market bag, Nanci adapted traditional Sashiko patterns. One covers the sturdy straps and the handy little pen pocket attached to the bag, with a second pattern cascading down the front. A single large Sashiko patch, which is layered on the front, sports another pattern. To add some extra pizzaz, Nanci has added a multi-colored ribbon and fabric tassel. It’s fun and quick to make, and she’ll show you how to do it.
Nanci begins class with an introduction to the basics of Sashiko, from a brief history to supplies and various applications. She then provides hands-on instruction that gets you stitching in no time. In addition, she demonstrates four different pattern transfer techniques and provides tips on how to attach patches and custom pockets to your projects. You’ll leave class with all of the supplies necessary to complete the market bag and to do even more projects at home.
Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced sewist looking to expand your skills, this class is the perfect space in which to disconnect from the rush of everyday life and to connect with an ancient textile craft.

Class Materials Include:
- Denim totebag (hand sewn locally)
- Olympus sashiko thread (two colorway options available)
- Needle, threader, thimble
- Fabric marking pens, stencils, ruler
- Printed handouts
Class Refund/Cancellation Policy
Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.
Instructor Bio
Proud to hail from the Midwest, Nanci is a daughter of an avid quilter and volunteer. Before becoming a Mom herself she worked in the nonprofit world of arts administration in Southern California. She confesses to developing a crush on every art form she touches. Love affairs include letterpress, stained glass, graphic design, botanical illustration, needlework (sashiko, embroidery), and all things fabric (pattern design, piecing, hand appliqué, quilting).
Nanci’s been teaching various crafts for about 10 years and is known for bringing communities together to make creative and useful items for local nonprofits. She now crafts in a variety of fiber and paper arts and indulges in her love of letterpress. Oh, and you can find her working at Two Hands Paperie most Sundays. She invites you to please stop in and say hello!
Two little known facts about Nanci – her rescue dog Poppy curls up under her workspace whenever she creates, and she was a World Champion in the Sweet Adelines International Competition. The organization, founded in 1945, is a worldwide nonprofit music education program for women that’s focused on barbershop harmonies. All we can say is Wow!
