Discovering Your Intuitive Colors In-Store Class

Class Details

Have some color fun! Join Lexis Krieg for a class devoted completely to color without regard to medium. Lexis, a local artist and graphic designer who’s known for her colorful designs, thinks the best way to understand color is through observation and experimentation. She’s designed a set of hands-on exercises to teach the basic theory and to introduce the concept of color schemes. But, there’s a twist. You use your favorites instead of the more familiar colors. The goal is for you to tap into your inner sense of color, increasing your confidence when working with it.

The required pre-class work (which is quite fun!) involves going through and pulling random paper scraps from your own collection or from magazines. Focus on the scraps you love, then sort through and organize them. They’re the raw material for tapping into your intuitive sense of color. During class, use the color wheel to analyze their characteristics – hue, shade, tint, tone, complementary, analogous, cool, warm – and where your scraps fit in. One result of all the exercises is a unique and personal color booklet for you to use in future creative projects.  

Toward the end of class, create a personal color “map” using your paper scraps. Seeing each other’s color map and talking about the differences is eye-opening. In a previous class, one student observed, “There isn’t any yellow in mine. And I’m all right with that.”

Your map measures 8.5x11” and can easily be framed to serve as a visual reminder of what you discovered in class. 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The class pre-work is a pre-requisite for participation and must be done before class. The class moves quickly and there’s no time devoted to this step. You’ll receive instructions about the pre-work well ahead of class.

Class Materials

Please bring the following materials:

• Two weeks before class: gather scraps of assorted solid and patterned paper (or fabric) in lots of colors. Examples: scrapbook and handmade paper, magazine or catalog pages, wrapping paper, stationery and envelopes - just about anything. You will receive instructions on how to sort and organize them ahead of class.
• 10-12 favorite paint swatch colors (from a hardware or paint store)
• Optional: apron

Class Materials Include:

• Printed color theory workbook designed by Lexis, color wheel and vocabulary resource sheet
  
• Additional color paper scraps from Lexis' personal collection
• Paper mounting materials
• Glue, pens, scissors, other tools, etc

Class Refund/Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Instructor Bio

Lexis Krieg can’t remember a time when she wasn’t making something. She took every art class in high school, then left to study art at Minnesota State University Moorhead. While there, she fell in love with graphic design and decided to leave the “real art" to “artists.” After working as a graphic designer for a while, she decided to grow her freelance business in order to satisfy her creativity and her urge to create with her own hands. The result was Lexisworks, a colorful creative studio.

Her background in graphic design shines through the joyful and colorful art she creates now: custom murals, surface patterns, illustrations, hand lettering, and mixed media paintings. No surprise that her studio is stuffed with vintage papers, tubes of paint, containers full of brushes and pens, old sketchbooks, glue, and a collection of materials for her daughters to create with. She’s decided she is an artist after all, and enjoys teaching workshops as a way to help others discover their own creative talents.

After 20 years of making things, Lexis has a new venture, Most Beautiful Design, which helps women entrepreneurs turn their story into a brand that actually looks and feels like them. As an artist-led designer, she's been doing some version of this her whole life — in conversations, in her art, in the way people tend to open up around her without knowing why. 

When people ask Lexis where she’s from she takes a deep breath and recites: “Alaska, Oregon, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and now Colorado.” (Somewhere in there she managed to live in England for a while.) Colorful Colorado became her home years ago, and she’s been inspired by the Rocky Mountains ever since. When she’s not deep into a client's story, you'll find Lexis making art with her kids, chasing color, or rearranging something just to see how it feels.
