Class Details

Don’t like your handwriting? Looking to enhance your cursive handwriting skills? Here’s your chance! Because of the digital world we live in, cursive skills in general have slipped. Reconnect with the elegance and flow of cursive writing by joining Nanci Hill Feeney, a local artist who appreciates legible and lovely penmanship, for a relaxed handwriting session to fine tune your style.

Start by reviewing the cursive script to refresh your basic skills and to engage your muscle memory. Next, practice making smooth connections between letters in order to create a pleasing visual rhythm. Nanci has created special sheets with some fun drills to help you find your groove. Once you’re comfortable, Nanci can show you how to enhance your writing with personalized touches and refined techniques, such as expressive and customized flourishes, unique ascenders and descenders, loops, bowls, and stems. These little nuances elevate your cursive.

We think you’ll rediscover the joy of putting pen to paper in the relaxing, supportive environment that Nanci creates. There’s also a bonus – recently published articles point to improved small motor skills and deeper learning from writing by hand. Scientists monitoring the brain activity of students taking notes by hand found higher levels of electrical activity. It crossed interconnected brain regions responsible for movement, vision, sensory processing, and memory. Sounds like good news to us!

Note that this practice session is designed for people who already have experience with cursive writing. It’s not designed for beginners.

    Instructor Bio

Proud to hail from the Midwest, Nanci is a daughter of an avid quilter and volunteer. Before becoming a Mom herself she worked in the nonprofit world of arts administration in Southern California. She confesses to developing a crush on every art form she touches. Love affairs include letterpress, stained glass, graphic design, botanical illustration, needlework (sashiko, embroidery), and all things fabric (pattern design, piecing, hand appliqué, quilting).

Nanci’s been teaching various crafts for about 10 years and is known for bringing communities together to make creative and useful items for local nonprofits. She now crafts in a variety of fiber and paper arts and indulges in her love of letterpress at Black Dog Studios. Oh, and you can find her working at Two Hands Paperie most Sundays. She invites you to please stop in and say hello!

Two little known facts about Nanci – her rescue dog Poppy curls up under her workspace whenever she creates! Nanci was a World Champion in the Sweet Adelines International Competition. The organization, founded in 1945, is a worldwide nonprofit music education program for women that’s focused on barbershop harmonies. All we can say is Wow!
