Little Red Leather Journal In-Store Class Mar 1
Little Red Leather Journal In-store Class
Sunday, March 1, Noon-4pm
Instructor: Jeff Becker
Limit: 6 students. All participants must be 15 years or older.
Class Details
Local book artist Jeff Becker has been teaching at Two Hands Paperie for years, and his classes on leather journals are always a favorite. This one features a journal that, at only 5x6 inches, is smaller and a comfortable size. For fun, it has a cover made from leather in a bright, eye-catching color – RED! The journal is bound with the basic Italian long stitch, which is a hand binding that was popular in the 1300s. Each signature of pages is attached directly to the cover by sewing through the leather. The result is a decorative stitch pattern on the spine. It’s straightforward to learn and is a strong binding that travels well. Perhaps more importantly, the pages lay flat when the book is open, making writing and sketching easy.
Join Jeff and create your own little red journal: tear down large sheets of paper for the pages, assemble the pages into signatures, and then sew the signatures through the leather cover. To personalize your new journal, include decorative end papers and an attached bookmark. A button and some beads add a special touch to the wraparound closure. This little book is a durable journal that stands up to lots of daily wear and tear!
An email will be sent to participants the Monday before the class. Classes with homework may receive pre-class info earlier. No email? Instructor Bio
Jeff Becker experimented with different media for years before discovering the book. He was immediately drawn to the possibilities of the form: how binding serves as an introduction to the content; the effect of structure on movement; the delightful anticipation one experiences when turning a page; the subsequent surprise or resolution; and how all the senses are involved when one handles a book. Jeff has been making journals ever since, and currently teaches workshops for Two Hands Paperie, The Book Arts League, the pARTiculars gallery in Lafayette, and the Lafayette Library. His education includes classes at the American Academy of Bookbinding, workshops with local and nationally known binders, and trial and error. See his work at https://www.facebook.com/FatCactusStudios
