While photos can be great, nothing captures the essence of a place like a hand-drawn sketch. This beginner's class with Mark Nassi focuses on the essential tools, observation skills, composition tips, and basic techniques to give you the confidence to sketch what you see. Meet up with Mark Nassi at Two Hands Paperie, where he'll briefly discuss tools, strategies, tips, and techniques before leading a guided sketching journey in the West End neighborhood of Pearl Street. 

Ten plus years ago Mark reignited his artistic passion as a means of managing daily stress. He experimented with various art forms before discovering his true calling in urban sketching. As an astute observer, he found that urban sketching came naturally to him – the sense of freedom it offered immediately drew him in. Since then he’s cultivated a strong personal practice, always carrying sketching essentials so he can document everyday experiences and grand adventures alike. Join Mark to “crawl’ through a nearby Boulder neighborhood and practice capturing memorable vignettes on paper.

Please bring the following materials - keep in mind we're traveling lightly!

• A favorite sketchbook that’s easy to carry and use on the go – Mark uses an A5 size, which is roughly 6x8-½ inches. Nothing large.
• A couple of small paint brushes – cheap is fine
• Colorado clothing: comfortable shoes, hat, sunscreen, and water bottle
• Snacks/sack lunch
• Optional: Color! Small, portable watercolor palette, markers, crayons, or watercolor pencils (if using water, a small jar or waterbrush is recommended)
• Optional: A small camping chair or stool for sitting
  

Class Materials Include:

• Micron PN black pen, 4H pencil, Peerless watercolor samples, water soluble graphite pencil

Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the first class meeting will be refunded or, at the participant's option, used to pay for another class. Two Hands Paperie will retain a $10 processing fee for EACH class cancelled by a participant. After 14 days, there is no refund or credit. In addition, the fee for a class cancelled within this 14-day timeframe by a participant cannot be transferred to pay for another class. These policies are to ensure that teachers are compensated for their investment in materials and in time spent preparing for the class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if fewer than 3 students enroll 48 hours prior to the scheduled class time. If for any reason Two Hands Paperie cancels a class, students will be called at the phone number on file and refunded the FULL class fee.

Mark Nassi is an avid urban sketcher who enjoys sharing this accessible art form with others of all ages and skill-levels. He helps coordinate urban sketching events throughout the Denver metro area and has taught urban sketching at the Colorado Pen Show, leading the largest class offering at the most recent show. 

In a world heavily structured by rules- especially in his work as an accountant and software developer- having a creative outlet that is both portable and memory-building is such a joy. He now shares that joy with others by teaching various urban sketching techniques with an emphasis on how to adapt them to each person’s unique style, available tools, and setting.
