Create a very personal piece of art by combining freeform designs, alphabet shapes, and intricate doodles within the outline of your hand – an art-filled hand! At the same time you’ll learn techniques that easily translate to other shapes. Renee Jorgensen, an experienced calligrapher and illustrator, is the instructor. She enjoys this type of loose design, and finds adding doodles and color to be a relaxing, almost meditative activity.
To start, Renee shows examples of already completed hands and provides suggestions for how to design and section off the interior space. Start working by tracing around your hand on heavyweight art paper. Renee provides a template of the letters of the alphabet for you to follow as you lay out and overlap the letters within the outline. She helps you pull your ideas together into a coherent design, then demonstrates various doodle patterns that are useful for filling in the spaces. Get “into the zone” as you doodle away, adding in some color while you work.
Working on your design is a relaxing way to tune the world out while having some creative fun. At the end of class, step back and admire your art-filled hand! It’s suitable for framing and makes a lovely, personal gift – perhaps for yourself?
